When you arrive at Queen’s Park Hotel, you have to make sure you check out the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. It is an art gallery in Central London which was founded in 1824 and houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. It is owned by the government on behalf of the British people and is free to enter. In 2019, it was ranked seventh in the world on the list of most visited art museums.

The museum/gallery is currently housed in the Wilkins building which was designed by William Wilkins and faces out onto Trafalgar Square. This portion of the museum has remained largely unchanged since its construction in the mid 1800s but several extensions and additions have been completed to date which includes the Sainsbury Wing on the Western side of the gallery which was completed in 1991.

The National Art Gallery is commonly recognised as a relatively small gallery in comparison to other major European art galleries. However, it does feature an impressive scope within its collections of important artists of Western painting. Some of the most notable of the many painters with work at the museum include Monet, Seurat, Vermeer, Cézanne, da Vinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo and many more.

On the National Gallery London website, you can take a look at the floorplans in each area of the museum to better plan your visit before getting there. There is a café at the gallery where you can choose from a selection of delicious food and drinks at the end of your visit to enjoy in the café or to take away. There is also a fantastic gift shop that offers a rage of great gifts and souvenirs such as prints, postcards and cushions.
