Oxford Street changed in character from residential to retail towards the end of the 19th century, and by the 1930s, the street was almost entirely retail which is still the case today.

As the character of the street developed more towards retail in the 19th century, shops such as drapers, cobblers and furniture stores opened on the street, some of which expanded into the first department stores. John Lewis started in a small store back in 1864 while Selfridges opened in 1909. Today, Oxford Street is home to a number of major department stores and flagship retail outlets. Some of the notable brands on the street include Marks & Spencer, Zara, Topshop, Foot Locker, H&M, Nike, Pandora and many more.

 

Oxford Street is very accessible being walking distance from Queens Park Hotel. It is also served by the Marble Arch, Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road tube stations giving easy access to the rest of London.
